MS Exchange 2003, Barracuda Spam
Filter, iPhones using IMAP and OWA
Install Backgrounder
The company currently
used IMAP to connect to an ISP for
email services. They had a Windows
Sever 2003 Domain. Cisco ASA
security applicance, Dell Switches,
and a good internet connection with
a few spare static IPs. They had
Outlook 2003/2007 on the desktops.
Mobile Email was a combination of
Windows Mobile and iPhones. The IMAP
connections were being closed
causing havoc with the users. Since
the company was coming into a busy
season, speed of the install was
very very critical.
We ordered MS Exchange
2007. Since we did not have a
64 bit OS, we loaded Exchange 2003.
This did require the server to be
upgraded. We had to increase the
memory to 4gb and add more hard
drives. The Windows 2003 Server had
a RAID 5 array but had a small
system partition. We needed to
increase the size of the partitions.
We purchased new drives, cloned the
existing ones, loaded the clone on
the new drives, and extended the
partitions for the install.
We then loaded and
configured MS Exchange 2003. Since
all the email was kept on the ISP
servers we imported the existing
messages using the Migration Wizard
in Exchange 2003. We configured IMAP
for the iPhones. This is the
preferred connection method between
Exchange Servers and iPhones. This
scenario allows any changes made on
the iPhone or Desktop to be
immediately available on the other.
We then turned our
attention to the Barracuda Spam
Filter. We configured the Spam
Filter with the correct domain and
network information. We configured
outgoing email to go out the
Barracuda also. This was because the
Barracuda allows us to add a footer
to all outgoing email. We configured
a few management reports that are
sent to the IT Managers email
account.
The Cisco ASA was
configured to send incoming email to
the Barracuda Spam Filter. Then
configured for OWA(Outlook Web
Access) requests to the Exchange
Server. Securely of course.
We made several changes
to the virus solution and backups.
Since new network services and data
was introduced to the network we
needed to update the data backups.
